The application deadline is January 1.
- All applicants must submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. Washington University's GRE code is 6929. Use department code 2601 Asiatic Languages and Literatures.
- All applicants must submit official transcripts from all undergraduate and/or graduate institutions attended (send ONE copy to the EAS office).
- Three letters of recommendation: in English and submitted via the online application system.
- A personal statement
- International applicants must submit their scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (Institution Code: 6929). Use department code 99 "for any department not listed."
- Supplementary material: Applicants must submit a writing sample that indicates a student's facility with literary critique, preferably an analytical essay on a work of East Asian literature or relevant topic, generally 10-30 pages. NOTE: ALL supplementary material MUST be uploaded by the applicant in the online application system. This includes resumes, writing samples, personal statements, etc. Our office is unable to upload these documents for applicants. Do NOT send hard copies of these documents to the office.
- For international students, do not send a copy of your passport or a copy of deposit certification. If admitted, those documents may be requested by the Graduate School at a later date, but not by the department.
- We do not offer spring semester admission. Our programs are fulltime day programs on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.
Applying for JD/MA or MBA/MA in East Asian Studies
Candidates for admission to a joint-degree program must complete all application requirements listed above for the MA, and submit a separate application to the relevant professional school. Candidates for admission to the JD/MA program must also submit their scores on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) to the School of Law. Candidates for admission to the MBA/MA program must also submit their scores to the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) to the Olin School of Business.
